Editorial Reviews
Leading cable companies have briskly deployed video-on-demand (VOD) over the last 12 months for three reasons: to differentiate their service from direct broadcast satellite (DBS) services; to improve the value proposition for digital cable; and to generate incremental revenue from their upgraded networks. VOD will generate revenues of $2.8 billion in 2006 due to the growing penetration and increasing breadth of VOD content. Although consumer use of VOD has been limited and content from the major studios remains restricted, cable multi-system operators (MSOs) already envision a future when all programming is on-demand. They are exploring network-based personal video recorder (nPVR) services and adding a wider range of programming to their VOD menus. This Report reviews the current status of VOD, analyzes the supply and demand challenges faced by MSOs, and examines various VOD business models under consideration. It includes a five-year forecast of VOD revenues and specific strategic recommendations for MSOs and content companies.
